The Dangers of Geoengineering as a Response to Climate Change
Hybrid Panel Presentation and Audience Q&A
A this hybrid event a panel of experts will lay out the current science and politics of solar and marine geoengineering and discuss the extraordinary risks associated with various geoengineering technologies. Attendees will learn more about how international treaties and federal governments are (or aren’t) stepping in to regulate geoengineering experiments, and engage with panelists in a discussion about how the environmental movement, policy makers, funders, and advocates should react to the proliferation of geoengineering...

Geoengineering governance event at Science Summit at Summit of the Future
Solar geoengineering, also called Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), refers to a set of speculative technologies that seek to artificially cool the planet by intervening into the earth’s climate systems. One of the most discussed options is the massive injection of sulphate aerosols into the stratosphere to reflect some incoming sunlight back out into space, in order to have a cooling effect. While some see solar geoengineering as a potential future...

HOME Alliance civil society statement on Marine Geoengineering
More than 100 organisation have issued a statement voicing their concerns about the proliferation of open air and water marine geoengineering experiments that are planned or already underway, many of which are selling carbon offsets, in defiance of international agreements. Increasingly, our oceans are at threat not only from the impacts of overexploitation and the climate crisis, but also from these misguided attempts to manipulate earth systems with the aim of countering some of the...

SCopEx project terminated
The HOME Alliance celebrated earlier this year the cancellation of a high-profile solar geoengineering experiment, the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, also known as SCoPEx. This experiment sought to test a controversial geoengineering technique called Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI), which aims to partially block sunlight from entering the Earth’s atmosphere by releasing pollutants high in the atmosphere. The impacts of solar geoengineering would be disastrous for the climate, environment, humanity and...

City councils orders solar geoengineers to stop outdoor experimentation
In the early hours of this morning, City of Alameda City Council members voted unanimously to call off the University of Washington’s Marine Cloud Brightening Project (MCBP), which had been conducting a geoengineering experiment off the coast of California. The city council had halted the tests a few weeks ago following the revelation that they were being carried out without public notice or any sort of review by the council. This morning’s decision to deny...

Geoengineering the Ocean is Not a Climate Solution
Outdoor experiments are going ahead in defiance of the CBD decisions and the drive for restrictive regulation under the London Convention/London Protocol, while negotiations under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement risk legitimising and entrenching these highly speculative, risky techniques. Watch our experts unpack this issue further with Lisa Levin, Scripps Oceanography, David Santillo, Greenpeace International, Panganga Pungowiyi, Indigenous Environmental Network and Silvia Ribeiro, ETC Group Moderator: Eesha Rangani, HOME Alliance

Grounding Teach-In on Geoengineering: A False Solution to the Climate Crisis
This (101) session critically unpacked, from a climate justice perspective, three intersections of geoengineering: its techno-financial /deterministic roots and ideology, human rights and social justice questions, and finally, global governance and sovereignty. Silvia Ribeiro, ETC Group, Tom Goldtooth, Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) and Dr. Max Ajl, Tunisian Observatory for Food Sovereignty (OSAE) led the teach-in which was loosely facilitated by the HOME campaign coordinator, Ruth Nyambura.

Solar Geoengineering is a Dangerous Distraction
At the most recent United Nations Environment Assembly, Africa’s leaders helped shoot down a resolution that called for more research into the benefits and risks of solar radiation modification. They identified the dangers of entertaining this fantasy and emphasized the need for effective and equitable climate solutions.

Overshoot Commission’s veneer of neutrality is solar radiation modification PR by stealth
This article exposes the fundamental flaws of the Climate Overshoot Commission and its report, including how it attempts to legitimise and normalise solar geoengineering, under the guise and pretence of 'neutrality'. The Climate Overshoot Commission was heavily criticised by both civil society, academics and several members and youth associated with the Commission - several whom decided to resign. While presenting itself with the appearance of a UN body (even mimicking the UNFCCC logo), the Commission was populated and run by pro-geoengineers from its very start.
