HOME Alliance’s civil society statement on marine geoengineering is open for new endorsements!

This statement which was originally launched last year, urges governments to halt marine geoengineering and reflects key developments, including the 2024 reaffirmation of the global moratorium on geoengineering by parties of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Longer summary or full text

The Hands Off Mother Earth! (HOME) Alliance is deeply concerned by the surge in open-water marine geoengineering experiments being planned or already underway worldwide.

Between 2019 and 2023, proposed marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) experiments quadrupled. These so-called “small-scale” trials carry serious risks—and often pave the way for large-scale deployment.

On World Oceans Day 2025, ahead of 3rd UN Oceans Conference, we are relaunching our civil society statement urging governments to halt marine geoengineering. This call reflects key developments, including the 2024 reaffirmation of the global moratorium on geoengineering by parties of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Let us stand together to protect our oceans from dangerous technological distractions. Please sign on and help spread the word!
