Investigating Geoengineering: Experimenting on Our Land, Ocean and Sky

Hands Off Mother Earth! (HOME) Alliance is excited to announce the second edition of our Media Fellowship Program, supporting journalists to critically examine geoengineering and its growing presence in climate discourse. This year’s fellowship will focus on land-based, marine and solar geoengineering approaches, encouraging deeper, more specialised investigations into how these technologies are being tested, promoted, and financed across different regions of the world.

Why This Fellowship?

As climate impacts intensify, proposals to deliberately alter ecosystems, oceans, and atmospheric systems are gaining traction. From large-scale land based geoengineering to marine and solar geoengineering technologies, vested interests are increasingly positioning geoengineering as a response to climate breakdown.

These approaches are being advanced through policy spaces, and by corporations and startups, often with limited public scrutiny. Indigenous Peoples, frontline communities, civil society organisations, and academics warn that such schemes are risky and speculative, and can deepen ecological harm, undermine biodiversity, and reinforce existing inequalities, while diverting attention from real climate solutions.

This makes rigorous, critical and investigative journalism essential. The HOME Alliance Media Fellowship aims to support  reporting efforts that interrogate these developments, centre communities, and contribute to a more grounded and justice-oriented public conversation on these so-called “climate solutions”.

Fellowship Focus Areas

Applicants are invited to propose reporting projects under one of the following tracks:

• Land-based Geoengineering (e.g. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), Direct Air Capture, Biochar, Enhanced Weathering, Carbon markets linked to land use etc.)

• Marine Geoengineering (e.g. Ocean Fertilization, Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, Seaweed Cultivation, Marine Cloud Brightening etc.)

• Solar Geoengineering (e.g. Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, Marine Cloud Brightening, Surface Albedo Modification Etc.)

The HOME Alliance Media Fellowship will offer selected journalists the opportunity to:

• Conduct in-depth investigations into geoengineering proposals, carbon markets, and how these technofixes affect communities, ecosystems, biodiversity, and policy landscapes.
• Engage directly with experts, including communities, climate justice organizations, and civil society groups resisting these dangerous interventions, ensuring well‑informed and impactful reporting.
• Access HOME Alliance network and partners, including civil society policy advocates, Indigenous Peoples, grassroots organizers, and researchers at the forefront of the climate justice movement.
• Gain insight about how decisions are made in global governance spaces, including in   UN climate processes and negotiations where geoengineering is being advanced.
• Access mentorship, editorial guidance and support to develop impactful, well‑researched and evidence-based stories that question dominant narratives and center voices of those demanding real solutions that cut emissions at source, at the levels needed, and do not further entrench fossil fuel dependence.

What Fellows Will Do

• Each fellow will produce at least the following stories on geoengineering and climate justice, highlighting both the risks and the resistance:
  • Two stories of at least 1000 words or audio-visual or multimedia packages of at least 10 minutes.
  • One in-depth investigative story of at least 2000 words or one in-depth audio‑visual story or multimedia package of at least 20 minutes.
• Participate in online capacity‑building sessions led by HOME Alliance.
• Wherever possible, engage with frontline communities and document their experiences and demands.
• Attend a key international or regional UN meeting or conference with support from HOME Alliance for on‑ground reporting from critical climate negotiations.
• Media reporting outputs are not limited to English language.

Fellowship Details

• The fellowship will run for a period of one year from August 2026-July 2027.
• Upto four journalists will be selected for the fellowship program.
• HOME Alliance will provide a stipend of USD 2000 to each media fellow to support news reporting (research, travel or any other relevant costs).  Journalists can also pair up in teams and submit joint applications where each fellow will receive 2000 USD.
• Stories published in original media outlets will be amplified through HOME Alliance’s website, social media, and partner networks

Who Can Apply

We invite applications from practicing journalists (print, digital, audio, or video) who:

• Have at least three years’ experience in journalism or media production.
• Demonstrable interest in climate, environment, policy or human rights reporting.
• Committed to investigative and justice‑oriented journalism.
• Are based in, or able to report on, regions where geoengineering projects and initiatives are emerging or being debated.
• Applications from Global South and the wider Global Majority regions are encouraged, including the Arctic circumpolar region.

3. Links or copies of three published or broadcast/multimedia work samples, ideally on the theme of climate justice.
4. A letter from an editor expressing interest in publishing your future work on geoengineering.
